Tubular double layered PLCL grafts (4mm inner diameter and 5cm length) comprises an outer gel spun fibrous layer by gel spin method and luminal porous layer by dip coating method. Gel spin method was optimized by a series of experiments using different concentrations of PLCL solution, volume, flow rate and rotation speed. Graft morphology, porosity, mechanical strength, burst strength and suture retention strengths were evaluated according to ISO standards and compared with ePTFE graft. Grafts fabricated using 8.5% of PLCL solution possess comparatively higher circumferential tensile strength and suture retention strength and can withstand normal pressure with out failure. Our PLCL grafts had an E-modulus value significantly lesser than ePTFE graft and higher than native blood vessels, means our grafts may have decreased compliance compared to native blood vessels. Overall, these small diameter PLCL grafts shows adequate mechanical properties to withstand at high pressure. |
