Corrosion is defined as the deterioration in quality of usually metallic material because of chemical and/or electrochemical reactions with its environment. Corrosion of metals requires local cells, consisting of two electrodes Corrosion is classified into eight forms : general corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, dealloying, and erosion corrosion. Corrosion can be mitigated by five basic methods: coatings, cathodic protection, materials selection, chemical inhibitors, and environmental change. In this presentation, the causes, mechanisms, and prevention methods of various types of corrosion will be discussed. |
