Trial of Quaternized Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) as Aion Exchange Membrane Material for All-Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries |

The ion exchange membrane is an important part of redox flow batteries. Nowadays, cation exchange membranes(CEMs) are mainly used in all-vanadium redox flow batteries such as Nafion because of their high ion conductivity and chemical stability. However CEM have a critical disadvantage to pass vanadium ions, which causes decline of battery capacity. To improve the problem of vanadium ion passage, quaternized poly(4-vinyl pyridine)(QPVP) was tried. It be used as an anion exchange membrane(AEM) material. The QPVP was synthesized by N-allylation of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) using allyl bromide and then alkalizated QPVP by soaking it in potassium hydroxide(KOH) solution. The structure change of polymer was confirmed with usual spectroscopy such as IR and NMR. The ionic conductivity of hydroxide anion was analysed in correlation the morphology and the polarity of medium. |
