Despite the increasing importance of branched polymers for various applications, their characterization still remains as a major challenge in polymer analysis since Zimm & Stockmayer proposed a branching analysis scheme based on the chain contraction factor in 1949. In this study, comb-shaped polystyrenes (PS) were synthesized by anionic polymerization and fractionated to obtain well-defined model branched polymers. A small number of chloromethyl groups were statistically introduced to a PS backbone and subsequently reacted with PS anions. TGIC fractionation provides with comb PS which has a uniform number and length of branches but the location of the branches along the backbone is randomly distributed. Using the fractionated PS comb, the radius of gyration and intrinsic viscosity in good and theta solvent are measured by triple detection method and the contraction factor g and g’ are determined. |
