Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) fiber is widely used in industrial application fields such as the industrial filtering industry and automotive industry requiring the heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical properties in many components. The hydrophobicity and dense molecular structure of PPS, however, make it insoluble in any kind of solvents at RT, which makes it more difficult to manage the M.W. control of PPS by intrinsic viscosity and GPC methods. Recently, we found partially sulfonated PPS without significant molecular reduction can be dissolved in several polar solvents such as DMF, DMAc, DMSO, and NMP. This enables us to measure intrinsic viscosity and GPC using NMP as a solvent, from which we can assess the molecular weight of as-polymerized PPS. More details will be discussed in the presentation.
