The nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of neopentyl arenesulfonates and pentaerithritol tetrakis(benzenesulfonates) with primary Grignard reagents produced unsymmetrical biphenyl and terphenyl derivatives, which are of great interest due to their biological and optical properties, in the presence of Ni/N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysts. Ni/NHC catalyst could allow the coupling reaction to undergo at room temperature within a short period of time, which would make this reaction be useful for the parallel/combinatorial chemistry.
