Formation and Characterization of Segregated Layered Structure from Polyimides Having Flexible Side Chains |

A series of polyimides having flexible side chains are designed and synthesized, which are composed of hydrophillic and hydrophobic segment of long chains. Firstly, we have synthesized two types of monomers having various chain length to adjust gallery space of layered structure and confirmed their chemical structure by NMR. Secondly, we have prepared polyimides having flexible side chains through thermal and chemical imidization of precursor poly(amic acid)s. As the side chains reach a critical length, the layered structures were formed by a segregated structure in which the rigid main chains are packed into layered structure with the flexible side chains occupying the space between layers. The polyimides showed well-defined segregated layered structures with a regular molecular arrangement within the layers. The variation of layer spacing as a function of composition was characterized through X-ray scattering. As a result, the polyimides showed sharp reflections in the small-angle region at spacing of 30.8∼36.4Å. |
