Hydrogels are greatly interested due to their promising applications as sensors, adsorbents, and materials in pharmacy. We present easy way of synthesizing hydrogel with a novel, pure network structure and high mechanical strength. The hydrogel was directly prepared by polymerization on hydroxide surface of silica particle. When particles are irradiated with 60Co gamma-ray at ambient condition, the surface is changed from hydroxide to peroxide. The peroxidized nano-particles act as an initiator as well as a cross-linker. We confirm the gel-like structures by SEM and Raman spectroscopy. Glass transition temperature of hydrogel by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is ~ 0℃. Universal testing machine (UTM) data show that hydrogel stands out 30MPa. For drug delivery system, hydrogel is swelled in gradient pH solution. It is easily interacted with hydroxide ion due to the acrylic acid moiety. |
