We report the chemical modification of carbon nanofiber (CNF) as novel nanofiller and the carbon nanotube substitute for nanofluid application. Unlike typical chemical method such as strong acid treatment, the oxygen plasma modification makes it possible to introduce the oxygen functional groups onto the surface of CNF without deterioration of intrinsic properties of CNF such as morphologies, thermal conductivity, and degree of graphitization. In addition, the entanglements and surface defects were reduced by a low temperature plasma treatment, leading to generate straight and smooth CNF. The plasma treated CNF-water suspension was reasonably stable and no sedimentation was observed over 6 months. The surface treated CNF-water suspension exhibited the enhanced thermal conductivity compared to carbon nanotube (CNT)/water system. This result demonstrates that the CNF can be an excellent substitute of carbon nanotube as nanofiller of nanofluid. |
