Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a keen subject of scientific and technological interest because of their excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. The self-assembling and bundle formation of CNTs have attracted many attentions for flexible paper-like sheets and aligned MWNT ribbons. Here we present the formation of a self-assembled film of hydroxy group-modified thin multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Hydroxy groups were introduced onto the side wall and endcap of MWNT via acid treatment. Morphologies of MWNT films could be controlled by the various coating method, such as filtering, drop casting, spraying method, etc. The results show that on densification of the CNT suspension during drying, multiple hydroxy group-modified MWNTs can be self-assembled through strong surface hydrogen bond interaction while MWNTs usually exist an entangled state in the film. |
