Complexing polymers have been shown to be one of the most promising materials for commercial metal enrichment and separation of many metals in industrial and municipal waste waters. In addition, conventional amine-type ion exchange resins are widely used in many commercial applications including the softening or deionizing of water, treatment of industrial wastewater, and the production and recovery of metals. Amine-based polymers such as poly(ethyleneimin) and poly(allylamine) offer many advantages for metal extraction applications. They are water-soluble, which make the particle surface more hydrophilic, and contain metal-binding agents (chelating agents) as an integral part of their structure. From these polyamines, novel polymers were synthesized using polymer-analogous functionalization reactions. Oxine was used as a typical ligand for metal enrichment and separation, and the polymers were characterized by spectroscopic and thermogravimetric methods. Preferentially conventional transition metals were investigated. |
