Analysis of UV absorbers and stabilizers using MALDI-TOF MS |

The range of applications of polymeric materials is extending at an amazing rate and the number of additives available to modify polymer properties is increasing proportionately. Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are extremely efficient stabilizers against light-induced degradation of most polymers. UV absorbers have been utilized to protect polymeric materials from photo degradation caused by sunlight or ultra-violet rich artificial light. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) in combination with mass spectrometry is proved to be a viable method for identifying the additives in polymer. Fragmentation patterns of UV absorbers (Tinuvin 234 and Tinuvin 329) and UV stabilizers (Tinuvin 770) were studied using MALDI-TOF MS. The MALDI mass spectra of analytes displayed some fragment ions as well as the [M+H]+ and [M+Na]+. Fragment ions of analytes were useful for the identification of additives in polymer. |
