Methanol crossover through the proton exchange membrane (PEM) is one of the major obstacles that currently prevent the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). In this study, Nafion membrane was modified by layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly using polyanion and polycation polymer onto the nafion 117 surface as methanol-blocking barriers. A poly(aniline-2-sulfonic acid), which was synthesized by horseradish peroxidase catalyzed oxidative free-radical coupling of the monomer, was used as a polyanion, and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) was used as a polycation. Methanol permeability was significantly decreased by LBL self-assembly without reducing the proton conductivity. |
