Modification of Nafion by Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembled Multilayere Films for Polymer Electrolyte |

Methanol crossover through the proton exchange membrane (PEM) is one of the major obstacles that currently prevents the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). In this work, multilayered nanofilms were deposited on the Nafion membrane by layer-by-layer(LbL) self-assembly between polyanions and polycations to prevent the methanol crossover. Polyaniline was used as a polycation and sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) as a polyanion, to produce methanol-blocking barriers on the membrane. The linear build-up of the multilayered films were monitored by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The morphology and thickness of the multilayered films were visually examined by TEM. We have measured conductivity and methanol permeability of the modified nafion membrane. The performance of direct methanol fuel cell using the modified Nafion membrane was also investigated. |
