The main function of bone cement is to stabilize prosthesis by filling the gap between the prosthesis and the surrounding bone and to transmit loads from the prosthesis the bone. PMMA bone cement, which was widely used in orthopedic surgery, has no ability for bone bonding, leading to aseptic loosening of the cement. To overcome these disadvantages of PMMA bone cement, several bioactive bone cements with high bioactivity and improved physical properties have been developed. One type of such bioactive bone cements is composed of Bis-GMA resin and bioactive inorganic filler. Recently, many attempts have been made to improve the application limitation and mechanical properties of Bis-GMA bone cement because of its high viscosity and use of diluent. We have prepared novel organic-inorganic hybrid bioactive bone cements containing Bis-GMA derivatives (3MA and its mixture) as matrix and inorganic fillers (AW-GC and β-TCP). The synthesized 3MA and its mixture had low viscosity by blocking hydroxy group of Bis-GMA. The obtained Bis-GMA derivative bone cements were characterized and compared with Bis-GMA cement control. |
