Composting is environmentally very important process for the reuse of organicmatter. In order for the process to be well designed and operated, a more quantitativeanalysis to the composting kinetics is needed. In this paper, a mathematical model whichis called the composting particle kinetics(CPK) model is applied to describe the kineticsof the process at the particle level and to calculate the concentration profiles of oxygen,biomass, soluble and polymeric substrate. In this model, a particle is understood toconsist of an outer aerobic layer and an anaerobic core. In the anaerobic core polymericsubstrate is converted into soluble substrate. This soluble substrate diffuses into theaerobic layer where it is oxidized by the aerobic population. A simulation shows thatthe development of the oxygen uptake rate(OUR) can only be understood by taking intoaccount the gradients within the particle and the predicted quantities can also used toanalyze different types of waste.
