A series of multibranched block copolymers, hyperbranched polyglycidol-block-Poly(L-lactide) (HBP-b-PLA) have been synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of glycidol followed by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide in the presence of ionic liquid, 1,3-di-cyclohexyl-benzimidazolium hydrogen carbonate as a catalyst. The ROP of different amounts of L-lactide on HBP-b-PLA yield a series of multibranched block copolymers of targeted molecular weight (MW) range (5,200–10,300) with narrow polydispersity. The synthesized polymers exhibit excellent self-assembly behaviors into spherical micellar structures (∼150 nm). An anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Dox), is effectively encapsulated in the micelles and the controlled Dox release is investigated under different pH conditions. This new chimeric materials thus display tunable properties that can make them useful for controlled drug delivery applications. |
