제목 Morphology and properties of PVA/MWNT Composite Films (Ⅱ)- Effect of surface modification of MWNT in Acid -
초록 Adhesion between polymeric matrix and fillers is one of the key factor for the improvement of reinforcing effect in composite materials. We have reported reinforcing effect of multi-wall nanotube (MWNT) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film. MWNT without surface treatment showed ca. 50% increase in tensile strength and modulus of the drawn PVA film at 5 wt% of MWNT, which was presumed to be resulted from the increase of PVA molecular orientation in the drawn films by the existance of MWNT as well as inherently excellent mechanical properties.
In the present study, we report the effect of surface modification of MWNT on the propertices of (PVA/MWNT) composite films. MWNT was treated in the mixture of sulfuric and nitric acid (3/1, w/w) for 1 hour at 100℃ and 140℃, respectively after sonication at room temperature. The modified MWNT was freeze-dried after treating in the acid.
The composite films of PVA/MWNT before and after modification of MWNT have been prepared by casting from DMSO solution followed by coagulation in ethanol or ethanol/DMSO mixture followed by drying. MWNT was dispersed in DMSO with the help of sonication and then PVA was added. PVA (DP=1700, D.S=99.5%) and MWNT were supplied by Kolon and Ijin, respectively. The films were drawn by 8 times on a hot shoe at 160℃. The loading of MWNT in PVA was at the range of 1~5wt%.
The mechanical properties of the films before and after acid treatment of MWNT were compared. The composite films were analyzed under SEM to observe the nanotube dispersion and the effect of surface treatment on the adheasion between matrix and the nanotubes. Polarized Raman spectroscopy was employed for identification and measurement of MWNT orientation in the oriented films while X-ray diffractometry was used for the measurement of the orientation of PVA. Moreover, DSC was used to analyze the effect of MWNT on thermal properties of PVA. The electrical properties of the composite films were also studied.
