Polymer migration seen in inhomogeneous flow fields was analyzed and compared with experiments performed using polystyrene solutions. When the polymer solution is put in a Couette flow device in which its inner wall is rotating, a polymer modeled as an elastic dumbbell is governed by a balance of immigration force acting to inhomogeneous flow fields, centrifugal force, and random Brownian force. The diffusion equation on the elastic dumbbell model was solved at steady state and concentration profiles of the polymer solution were obtained. Theoretical results here were compared with experimental ones obtained using polystyrene solutions. These results may have implications in fabrication of graded index polymer optic fbers. |
