Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is in the spotlight as a biodegradable and renewable polymer, because the environmental pollution and the exhaustion of fossil resources have become severer than ever. However, the weak thermal and mechanical properties of PLA limit its application. Recently many researches have been performed to improve various properties of PLA by applying CNT as a modifier, since CNT has the excellent properties such as high strength, high modulus, thermal resistance, and conductivity. In this study, we prepared PLA-grafted MWNT by melt-polycondensation of lactic acid with carboxylic acid-functionalized MWNT. The PLA-grafted MWNT synthesized was solution-blended with a commercially-available PLA (D-isomer content of ~10%) to produce final PLA/MWNT nanocomposites. The acid-functionalized and PLA-grafted MWNTs were characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Thermal and mechanical properties of PLA/MWNT composites were then investigated by using DSC and UTM, respectively. |
