A novel cell-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold for cartilage tissue engineering |

Recently, the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffolds are gaining a keen attention in the tissue engineering field, because they are highly biocompatible and provide not only a physical support but also favorable environments to cells. This talk introduces a novel ECM scaffold derived from cultured chondrocytes. Porcine chondrocytes were cultured in monolayer to form a highly dense ECM network around the cell. The ECM-cell layer was then reconstructed to a highly porous 3-D ECM scaffold. The cell-derived ECM scaffold was biocompatible and showed good physicochemical properties for tissue engineering purpose. It was also highly efficient to construct hyaline-like cartilage from chondrocytes and supported well chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Therefore, the cell-derived ECM scaffolds could be a promising platform to construct implantable artificial cartilages from chondrocytes or stem cells, probably by providing cells with a natural cartilage-like environment. |
