The purpose of this study is to prepare polymeric microspheres which are suitable for electrical applications. The polymeric microspheres for electrical applications should contain electric additives like coloring matter or charge control agent. Moreover, these have a capacity for forming complexes with dyes or pigments. In this investigation, we describe the preparation of the monodisperse particles by emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and subsequent heterogeneous surface saponification of monodisperse poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) microspheres. To prepare PVAc microspheres having various particle sizes and uniform particle size distributions, emulsion polymerization of VAc was conducted using 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride as an initiator and sodium dodecyl sulfate as an emulsifier. PVAc microspheres with high yield were obtained through emulsion polymerization of VAc. Monodisperse PVAc microspheres prepared were saponified in alkaline solution, maintaining their spherical morphology. Various surface morphologies such as flat or wrinkled and swellable or nonswellable ones formed by the various molecular parameters and saponification conditions were examined.
