제목 | Facile Covalent Attachment of Well-Defined Poly(t-butyl acrylate) on Carbon Nanotubes |
초록 | Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SCNTs) and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) have outstanding electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties.1 Thus, their potential applications have been proposed for the field emission displays, sensors, gas storage media, actuactors and fillers in composites materials.2 While some of these applications are being realized in the product research,3 the development of most applications have often been impeded by their inherent insolubility in solvents and low dispersity in host matrices, resulting in poor processiblity. One method to overcome this challenge is to attach polymers on CNTs via covalent-bond to improve their solubility and introduce high degree of functionality. In our study we prepared p(t-butyl acrylate)-grafted-CNTs by attaching well-defined polymers synthesized by ATRP onto carbon nanotubes via radical addition reaction. Polymeric radicals are generated by the atom transfer reaction between the halogens at the polymer chain end and the transition metal complex. (Scheme 1) TEM , Raman, IR analysis, together with solubility test suggested the successful covalent-attachment of p(t-butyl acrylate) onto both SWNTs and MWNTs Scheme 1.
