A mild sulfonation of beads is carried out after fully swollen in chlorinated aliphatic solvents under forced stirring, where the recovery of used solvents is inevitable. In this study, the compatibility between sulfonated beads with sulfonating agents gradually increased, as the sulfonation degree to beads increased. In order to get a better sulfonation, it was necessary to get some polarity to hydrophobic poly(styrene-co-DVB) beads. In this study, modified copolymer beads were prepared by suspension polymerization of styrene, divinyl benzene and a small quantity of hydrophilic monomers like methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate. As the results, the sulfonation to modified beads compared to poly(styrene-co-DVB) showed enhanced yields. |
