For high-performance proton exchange membranes, segregation of sulfonated hydrophilic block is crucial to develop well-connected ionic channels. Usually hydrophilic block of sulfonated poly(arylene ether)s are prepared by copolymerization of hydrophilic AA type sulfonated monomers with hydrophobic BB type comonomers, which restricts the incorporated amount of sulfonic acids and eventually decreases the size of the ionic channels. In this study, a series of hydrophilic AB type sulfonated monomers with different number of sulfonic acids were synthesized and polymerized to obtain wholly hydrophilic polymer block. Detailed synthesis of monomers, and their polymerization will be presented. |
