Success of Flat Panel Display (FPD) such as Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) accelerates the development of new type of FPDs. Glass based displays encounter limitation when thinner and lighter in weight become point of interest, thus the polymer substrate emerges as a substitute. Polymer substrates have also limitations in terms of thermal stability, chemical resistance, and optical characteristics and so on when compared with the glass. With advent of new processing technologies, some of the obstacles can be overcome during the display manufacturing. However, certain properties such as gas barriers, chemical protection layers become important issue for display manufacturers. PES has been a good candidate for flexible display substrate due to its high optical transmission and high glass transition temperature of 230°C. Another important issue is gas barrier property of the polymer substrate. Glass does not transfer gas through but polymer is porous. Coating is one way to improve the gas barrier property of polymer substrates. Organic and inorganic coatings can be used as a gas barriers and/or chemical protection layers. Some of the key characteristics will be discussed regarding coating on PES films in terms of their gas barrier properties and chemical protection. |
