The structure-property relationships of electrically active polyurethane elastomers that can be used as an actuator were studied. The polyurethanes based on polycaprolactone or fluorinated polyether as soft segments, dimethylpropionic acid as potential ionic center were synthesized. Various kinds and contents of soft segment and ionic site were varied and the effect of this variations on the electric activity of polyurethanes were measured. That is, the polyurethane film was coated with gold as the electrode on either surface by ion sputtering and the film was vertically suspended in air, and the top of the film was fixed. The electric field induced bending displacement of the film's free end was measured with laser displacement meter.
