Estimation of Molecular Weights of Polymer Using Rheological Properties |

Natural polymers capable of fiber formation need to measure absolute molecular weights(MW) using light scattering or GPC equipped with special columns due to hydrogen bonding. However, these devices are not accessible for all researchers and may not be applicable in some cases. In spite of the importance of MW in fiber spinning, it is still difficult and inaccurate to measure it. Therefore, a reliable new method is required. Development of ionic liquid enables us to obtain their uniform solutions of polymers such as cellulose. The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable and convenient method for measurement of MW by studying rheological behaviors of polymer solutions. We tested the method to cellulose as well as a general polymer, polystyrene. From the viscoelasticity of solutions, characteristic concentrations were determined by nonlinear regression and a relation between MW and viscoelastic properties was obtained by analysis with scaling theory.
