Surface Modification of Polymers by Ar Ion Beam |

The properties of low weight, high flexibility and good processability make polymer materials a viable substitute for metal and glass in many applications such as automobile electronics and telecommunications. Among these materials, PC/ABS is very important plastic for interior and exterior parts in the automobile application. PC/ABS blends combine the benefits of both PC and ABS in one material. They exhibit a unique set of performances including high flow, toughness and heat resistance. For the exterior part of automobile, PC/ABS is used as a polymer substrate of chrome plating for car emblems and automotive badges. In general process of metal plating, the plastic should be etched on the surface for anchoring effect between polymer substrate and metal surface. The etching process on the surface is performed using very strong acids such as chromic acid and sulfuric acid which can be a cause of environmental problems and need a lot of money for treatment. In the present study we have modified and etched the PC/ABS surface by argon ion beam treatment using hybrid ion beam system. All the PC/ABS samples were treated using a 1 KV anode voltage with different time ranged from 5-50 min. Ar gas ion was introduced into the ion gun to obtain Ar ion. The distance between the ion source and substrate holder was about 15 cm. A radio frequency (RF) bias voltage ( 600 V) was applied to the substrate holder. |
