A composite sorbent of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) for removal of heavy metals from industrial and agricultural wastewater has been investigated. Macroporous PAN/HAp composite beads were successfully prepared by wet extrusion process from PAN/HAp solution in DMF. HAp was dispersed by sonication followed by dissolving of PAN to give HAp content in PAN matrix up to ca. 70% and porosity up to 80%. Sorption kinetics of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu) by the beads were studied using a fixed-bed column system and a atomic absorption spectroscope. Adsorption rate and maximum adsorption capacity of the beads were calculated by applying Adams-Bohart model on the column data. The effects of HAp content, bead dimension, and pH on the adsorption properties were investigated as well as the change of sorption behavior according to the mixture of metals. |
