A series of novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials was prepared with diol and alkoxysilane by nonhydrolytic sol-gel reaction for optical applications. The diol compound used in our research was Bisphenol A (BPA) or 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphenol (CF3-BPA), which was reacted with (3-acryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) in the presence of a catalyst of barium hydroxide monohydrate [Ba(OH)2•H2O]. APTMS and catalyst were mixed at 80 oC. The diol was added continuously to the mixture in 2hrs. After the additional stirring for 2hrs, vacuum heating and filtering were followed to remove byproducts and catalyst. Then, it was spin-coated and exposed to an UV lamp for crosslinking and further annealed for 3hrs at 150oC. The refractive index, film thickness, thermo-optic coefficients and propagation optical loss of these films were measured using the prism coupler. The replica of the films of CF3-BPA and APTMS were also prepared with a PDMS stamp through UV embossing. |
