제목 The Effects of the Addition of MMA-precoated UHMWPE Powder on the Physical Properties of PMMA Bone Cement
초록 Since polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement for prosthetic fixation was introduced by Charnly, it has been used extensively as a grout between a metal prosthesis and a bone. However an unresolved problem is thermal necrosis of bone, leading to prosthetic loosening. Another is chemical necrosis of bone, exhausting mechanical property. To overcome these disadvantages of bone cement, we have developed new bone cement that consists of MMA monomer and PMMA powder containing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powder precoated by MMA. The UHMWPE powder which is precoated with MMA was prepared by modified surface-precoating method. This study utilized FT-Raman, SEM, UTM to examine mechanical property and thermocouple to detect polymerization temperature. It was observed that the maximum tensile strength was 46.21 ± 1.23 MPa with 3 wt% UHMWPE powder which is precoated with MMA (P < 0.05). We also found that the temperature during the polymerization of bone cement with UHMWPE powder is lower than that of pure bone cement.
