Functional polymers having piezoelectric activity have long been the subject of curiosity and have caused recent interest. Crystalline polymers such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) with a large dipole moment exhibit the piezoelectric effects. Amorphous polymers with high concentrations of dipole moments also show piezoelectric properties after poling. A potentially piezoelectric polymer must have a large concentration of dipoles. We have proposed that three- and four-membered rings with several cyano substituents held rigidly in alignment will have large dipole moments and these polymers are potential piezoelectric materials. Recently we prepared poly(meth)acrylates containing p-(1,1,2-tricyano-2-carbomethoxycyclopropyl)phenoxyethyl group. This work is extended to the synthesis of another polyacrylate containing tricyanocyclopropyl group. The present report describes the synthesis and radical polymerization of m-(2,2,3-tricyano-3-carbomethoxycyclopropyl)phenoxyethyl acrylate (5). We selected tricyanocyclopropyl group as a piezoelectric chromophore because it has larger dipole moment and expected to exhibit higher piezoelectric activity. To verify this fact, molecular modeling calculations were performed on the compound 5 using atom superposition and electron delocalization molecular orbital (ASED-MO).
