Synthesis of Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Copolymer with various Degrees of Sulfonation for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |
초록 |
Even though Nafion-based membranes are good proton conductors and chemically stable, their applicability has been restricted because of their low moduli, reduced conductivity at temperatures above 80°C and high methanol permeability and cost. The sulfonated aromatic copolymers have advantages such as exellent mechanical strength, easy prossability and low cost and may be specific in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) because of the lower methanol permeability compared to Nafion-based membranes. In this study, high molecular weight sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with various degrees of sulfonation were synthesized by a direct copolymerization. Sulfonated monomers were prepared by electrophilic substitution with a fuming sulfonic acid and aromatic dihalides. The ion exchange membranes were fabricated by a solution casting method from these copolymers. The resulting copolymers and membranes were confirmed and evaluated for application to direct methanol fuel cell. |
