Fabrication of hydroxyapatite fibers via electrospinning |

Fibrous hydroxyapatite can be a promising material for the application of the reinforcement for hydroxyapatite/polymer biodegradable bone substitutes and as a skeletal mesh with ion-exchange filteration. Hydroxyapatite(HA) fibers were prepared by electrospinning technique with an organic/inorganic mixture solution and a sol-gel reaction route. Various electrospinning parameters, such as solution concentration, TCD, and applied field were controlled to fabricate the ultrafine HA fibers. Obtained electrospun HA fibers had average diameters of submicron (800nm) to several micron with smooth surface evidenced by SEM observation. As- electrospun HA fibers were calcined at 600-1000 oC to remove binder materials and to obtain the pure HA composition. Calcined fibers had somewhat rough surface by removal of binders and showed some interfiber junction points. X-ray diffraction analysis were conducted to investigate the crystal structure of the as- electrospun and calcined HA fibers. |
