As electrophoretic polymer particles, poly (methyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) (PMMA-co-AAM) was synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization. Polymerization was carried out using 2-2'azobis (2-methyl propion amidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) as an initiator. The fabricated particle size and shape were observed via scanning electron microscope (SEM). The particles had approximately 300nm of uniform size and round shape. Molecular structure of the product particles was measured by using FT-IR. In order to determine electrophoretic properties, the zeta potential was measured by electrophoretic light scattering (ELS). For zeta measurement, the particle was suspended both in aqueous phase and in oil phase. Zeta potential results showed that the surface of the particle had positive charge in a dispersing medium. As suspending oil, low dielectric oil containing OLOA as charge control agent was used. |
