In conjugated polymer based polymer solar cells (PSCs), it is common to use a thin layer of LiF or Ca between the active layer and the cathode to improve the performance of PSCs. The role of LiF or Ca has been suggested to be that of modifying the work function of the cathode and introducing a dipole at the cathode interface, affecting charge injection. However, LiF and Ca are vapor deposited in vacuum and very unstable in air; thus such thin layers are impossible to use in roll-to-roll printing techniques, which is the biggest advantage of polymer electronic devices compared with their inorganic counterparts. In this respect, we have investigated a thin layer using water-soluble conjugated polymer on top of active layers P3HT and PCBM which has many advantage such as solution-process and good air-stability. In addition, PSCs with a water-soluble conjugated polymer thin layer show enhanced efficiencies compared with conventional PSCs. |
