Characteristics of Nafion/silica hybrid membrane depending on silica content for zinc-bromine redox flow battery |

Energy storage has become the critical issue for the future energy supply. Redox flow battery is an electochemical energy storage system. The redox flow battery offers advantages in the energy efficiency, long life-cycle and low costs compared with other technologies. Nafion/silica hybrid membranes are prepared by the sol-gel process and employed as the separator for Zn-Br redox flow battery. Nafion/silica hybrid membrane was prepared from Nafion and tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) as silica precursor in the methanol-water mixture solvent. Nafion membranes are swollen in the solvent. Then the TEOS is introduced into the Nafion membrane for the sol–gel process. Thermogravimetric analysis of the membrane indicates the increase of silica content. The properties of the Nafion/silica hybrid membranes are investigated by scanning electron microscopy and LCR meter. The bromine permeability of the membrane is measured by the ion chromatography. |
