Polymer actuators exhibit favorable characteristics such as rapid response, high mechanical energy density, high flexibility, light weight, and easy processing. Furthermore, they can hold strain under dc activation and induce relatively large actuation forces. But, polymers have low dielectric constants relative to ceramics, they require high operating voltages to actuate. We report new polymer/SWNT composites for field-activated actuator. The new composite can actuate to a large strain at relatively low operating voltages. The properties are caused by typical high electrical conductivity of SWNT. In this paper, we tried to various matrix including ferroelectric-polymer, relaxor ferroelectric terpolymer, and insulator. Here, we demonstrated improved actuating performance of polymer/SWNT composites according to SWNT condition. |
