Nanoclays have been widely studied due to its novel characteristics, which is applicable to develop new packaging with improved properties, especially barrier property. Such study and development is often targeted to the food industry for the extension of shelf life of product. In this study, polypropylene (PP)/organically modified montmorillonites (MMT) /Borosilicate glass hybrid nanocomposites with various contents and compatibilizers were prepared by melt mixing process with controlled residence time. The physical and mechanical properties of hybrid nanocomposites has been characterized, and the morphological observation was performed with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The reinforcing effect of polymer composite by both borosilicate glass and clay was found, and the improvement of gas barrier properties was observed due to the formation of tortuous path by hybrid filler. |
