In carbon fiber manufacturing, polyacrylonitrile(PAN) is known to the most important and promising precursor. There are many PAN-based fibers advantages including a high strength and modulus, high degree of molecular orientation, higher melting point and a greater yield of the carbon fibers. In this study, PAN-based precursors have been synthesized by solution and dispersion polymerizations. The effects of various experimental parameters, including the concentration of co-monomer and initiator, kind of solvent, and temperature were investigated. The structure and properties of PAN-based precursors and the resultant fibers were characterized by GPC, SEM, 1H-NMR, FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. |
