The electrodialysis (ED) using cation- and anion-exchange membranes is mainly used for the production of drinking water from brackish water and seawater. In addition, ED is also used for desalination of aqueous solutions in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Thus, development of stable and cost effective ion-exchange membranes with good physico- and electro-chemical properties is highly desired. Therefore, PE/PP mesh possessing excellent mechanical strength and chemical resistance was used as a supporting substrate for homogeneous commercial cation exchange membranes. A styrene monomer solution containing thermal initiator was inpregnated into the substrate and thermally polymerized and crosslinked by controlling the content of divinylbenzene/styrene. The prepared membranes were then subsequently post-sulfonated using conc. sulfuric acid. The cation exchange membranes were evaluated through ion exchange capacity (IEC), electric resistance(ER), and water uptake(WU). |
