Synthesis and Characterization of Hydrocarbon-Based Multiblock Copolymers and Their Applications in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery |

A series of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) multiblock copolymers with various block lengths was synthesized and tested as ion exchange membranes for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Sulfonated and non-sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers were prepared and used to synthesize the multiblock copolymers by condensation polymerization. The resulting polymers were characterized with 1H-NMR, ion exchange capacity (IEC), proton conductivity, water uptake, vanadium permeability, chemical stability, and VRFB cell performance. The SPAES multiblock copolymer with an IEC of 2.0 exhibited an excellent coulomb efficiency (99~100%) and a high energy efficiency (89.9%) at a current density of 40 mA/cm2, which values are much higher than those of Nafion115. |
