Present common reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is consisted of support and active layer. Salt rejection is occurred on polyamide layer, but polyamide is very susceptible to chlorine ion. This problem can be overcome by addition of high chemical resistance material. A Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) has various notable properties, especially chemical inactivity. So we introduce MWCNT into RO membrane production process. To improve dispersion of MWCNT, we attach functional groups on its sidewall. Then these were dispersed in m-phenylenediamine (MPDA) solution. polysulfone membrane is prepared for support active layer, and polyamide interfacial polymerization was proceed with MPDA solution and trimesoyl chloride solution. Performances of formed membrane were tested with crossflow apparatus, and active layer features were studied by various equipment. From these studies, we concluded that our modified RO membrane has superior chemical resistance compared to general polyamide membrane. |
