Evaluation of inflammation response of natural and synthetic biomaterials-based scaffolds. |

Biomaterial derived from natural and synthetic source can support suitable surface for cell attachment, proliferation, differentiation, and migration. The in vivo inflammation response of biomaterials is very important for practical application in the filed of tissue engineering. In this study, we prepared and characterized PLGA-, SIS- and PLGA/SIS-based scaffolds to compare the host tissue response by immunohistochemical staining with ED1. The scaffold subcutaneously implanted in Fischer rats. Then, we assessed the host tissue response to PLGA-, SIS- and PLGA/SIS-based scaffolds. PLGA-based scaffolds stimulated much higher host tissue responses than SIS-based scaffolds. These findings indicate that it should be possible to improve the biocompatibility and successful engraftment of materials by modifying scaffold to decrease their inflammatory properties.
