Inkjet Printed n-Channel Organic Field-Effect Transistorsusing Titanium Oxide Interfacial Layer |

We demonstrate improved performance of n-channel organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) by introducing a titanium sub-oxide (TiOx) electron injection layer between the active layer and metal electrodes. The TiOx layer between [6, 6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) active layer and Al electrodes results in formation of an interfacial dipole, reducing the effective electron injection barrier. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) directly reveals the formation of a permanent dipole at the PC61BM/Al interface. The lowered contact resistance induced by the reduced injection barrier explains the enhanced device performance. Moreover, the devices in this study show a dramatically increased lifetime since the TiOx layer can protect the active layer from penetration of both oxygen and moisture. Because all of the layers are fabricated by an inkjet printing method, it may offer the possibilities of low-cost mass production of OFETs. |
