The effects of the addition of aliphatic dibasic salts in poly(styrene-4.1-sodium styrenesulfonate) PSSSNa and poly(styrene-6.9-sodium methacrylate) PSMANa ionomers were studied by DMTA, DSC and XRD techniques. The clarity of samples ranges from almost transparent to opaque. DSC plots showed no crystalline melting peaks in any of the systems below the decomposition temperature of the ionomers, whereas, XRD plots showed peaks for most of the non-transparent samples. Negligible change in loss tangent peaks and slight increase in the ionic-modulus was observed in most of the PSSSNa systems. Dibasic salts showed no change in loss tangent peaks, while, increase in modulus with increase in alkyl chain lengths of organic salts was found in PSMANa systems. From the observed results, it can be suggested that the increase in the values of modulus, and little or negligible effects of the types of the salts (i.e. alkyl chain lengths of dibasic salts) on loss tangent peaks, may be because of reinforcing effects of these organic salts due to their phase separation in matrix phase. |
