Sulfonated poly(phenylene)s contatining hexaphenylbenzene moiety (SPPTPB) were successfully synthesized for proton exchange membrane. The polymers (PPTPB) were prepared by Ni-catalyzed carbon-carbon coupling reaction of 1,2-bis(4-chlorobenzoyl)-3,4,5,6-tetraphenylbenzene and 2,5-dichlorobenzeophenone. These polymers have all carbon-carbon linkages without any ether linkage on polymer backbone, which were not attacked by nucleophiles such as hydrogenperoxide, hydroxide anion and radical. The polyphenylene structure provides a stiff and resistane backbone, whereas hexaphenyl group provides high thermostability, and sites for chemical modifications. Also pendant benzoyl group enables the solubility of the material. The membranes were studied by 1H NMR, ion exchane capacity, proton conductivity, Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), and water uptake. The chemical degradation test of the prepared membrane was performed by Fenton’ reagent and compared with Nafion. |
