This work addresses if the property of the ash-free coals (AFCs) that made by thermal extraction using organic solvents, can be tailored. Following the production of AFCs, steam gasification and catalytic steam gasification are performed and compared with their raw coals. As a means to achieve the enhanced reactivity, the thermal extraction is performed varying the raw coals of various ranks and the organic solvents with different polarity such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), ethylenediamine (EDA), tetralin (TTL), and 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN). The reactivity is significantly different depending on the kind of the coals and the extraction solvents. The combination of low-rank coals and polar solvent produces reactive AFCs for steam gasification even at mild condition. While AFCs extracted using non-polar solvents can be used as coking coal precursor or carbon fiber source, concluding that the property of AFCs is tailorable. |
