PLGA has been widely used as biomedical applications due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, PLGA degradation products are known to decrease the pH in the surrounding tissue, thus causing local inflammatory reaction. Moreover, it can be required to enhance mechanical property and biocompatibility for use as load-bearing bone implants. In this study, we developed the PLGA/inorganic composites with Mg(OH)2 and β-TCP that induce pH neutralizing effect and osteoconductivity, respectively. Inorganic particles were uniformly blended in melted polymer via a twin extrusion process. PLGA blends were characterized by using GPC, TGA, DSC, UTM and FE-SEM. Also, the in vitro degradation of composites was examined in PBS solution (pH 7.4) at 50 °C. From the results, the modulus of PLGA/inorganic composites increased compared to PLGA composite, and Mg(OH)2 particles in the composites effectively reduce inflammation caused by PLGA degradation induced acidic environment. |
